Dukundkawa Musasa cooperative association was built in 2000. It is located in the north area, Gakenke, where Gorilla Mountain lays. More than 300 farmers produce coffee there, and around 20% of them are female workers. Three washing stations are located there. Rule washing station is at Rail Sector.
They began coffee production in 2004. Coffee cherries from 824 selected-farmers are processed there. Those coffees are cultivated on a 167ha-land, where it rains a lot and takes more time for coffee to grow. However, because of these conditions, their coffee get to have high quality and good body.
The farm is at 1800-2100 masl, and the washing station is at 2100 masl.
They sort coffee beans on African Tables and let them sun-dry for about 24days depending on the weather condition.
They harvest coffees once a year from around March to October and the coffees get processed from June to October. The ph-value of soil is at 5.1, which means it’s acid, and the soil is silt. The temperature is stable at around 17-18℃. Annual rainfall is about 1200-1300mm. Each coffee trees are 2-2.5m apart from each other, and about 2500 coffee trees are planted per hectare. Smallholder farmers produce coffee, and each of them are in charge of cultivating about 200 coffee trees.
They have varieties of newest facilities to control the farming and processing environment and the farmers pay attentions to the very details. Those cultivated are sorted in small lots by the date of cultivation.
At Musasa area, the famous former king of Mibambwe used to live in 15th century, and the farmers dedicate and offer coffee seeds to him once a year to get ready for the next season. People believe this brings the power and courage of the kingdom. Although the king has passed away long time ago, those farmers, as a Dukundkawa association at Musasa area, still have spirits to produce best coffees.
Dukundkawa association guaranteed the high level of living standard for the members. The association has achieved a sustainable coffee production in both of economically and in environmentally. In 2005 hey got a certification of fare trade, and in 2010, at Rwanda COE their coffee got placed in the second place.
The farmers take a good care and work to the details so that they can produce high-quality Bourbon coffee. Their coffees are exported internationally after going through many processes, which are well controlled and managed at the washing station, like hand-sorting, washing, soaking, fermentation, grading, drying etc.
