Rwanda is one of the producing countries that ONIBUS COFFEE has visited to the production area.Fresh new crop has arrived again this year. The coffee from Nyarusiza Washing Station, located in the Nyamagabe district of southern Rwanda, has a bright but mild, easy-drinking acidity and a moist, sweet taste. The transparent taste is characterized by a wonderful balance of fruitiness like mandarin oranges and orange peel, and the sweetness that follows afterwards is reminiscent of brown sugar. This is a light roast Rwanda coffee that even those who do not like acidity should try.
The coffee is grown in soil at high altitudes (1,700-1,900m), which allows the coffee to develop rich flavors due to the difference in temperature. In addition, Nyungwe Forest National Park is located just to the west, with fertile volcanic ash soil and spring water from abundant sources.Because the washing station is located on a gentle slope, the African bed is evenly exposed to sunlight, allowing for highly uniform refining.Only ripe cherries are hand-picked and pulped the same night, then divided into three grades by weight, followed by 12-18 hours of fermentation and further grading. The cherries are then soaked in water tanks for another 24 hours. The beans are first placed on a covered drying rack for about 6 hours, where they are still wet and unripe beans are sorted green and removed. Then the beans are sorted on an uncovered drying table and dried for about two weeks (weather permitting). When the beans reach a humidity of about 11 degrees Celsius, they are stored in a warehouse and then transported to a dry mill in Kigali for processing and cupping evaluation by a partner Q grader. In this way, beans are produced, sorted, refined, cupped, and evaluated under strict quality control before being shipped.
At Rwanda's washing stations, the majority of beans are sorted by women. Most of the local farmers are small-scale farmers growing about 300 coffee trees on 0.5 hectares of land, growing maize and various beans and crops for subsistence. The majority of their income comes from coffee production, which they use to pay for their children's education, family medical expenses and health insurance, purchase livestock, and other family needs.Lots are strictly separated by the date of the first harvest, and then cupped by a Q grader to group lots with similar impressions.
ExporterBUF COFFEEBUF COFFEE was founded by Epiphanie Mukashaka, a dynamic woman with great ideas and a love for people, and is now headed by her son, Samuel.Epiphanie lost her husband and family in the Rwandan genocide of 1994, but she did not abandon her family's coffee plantation. With the financial support of the Rwanda Development Bank and the USAID Pearl Project, he established the first Remera Washing Station.Since then, BUF has been able to increase its profitability in Rwanda, following a new policy of producing specialty coffee by improving the quality of coffee rather than the quantity.
