This coffee was produced by Rubiera Velasquez in Tolima, Colombia. She won a prize at the Colombia Washed Coffee Festival, which was held by local trader Fair Field Trading in September 2023.

FFT values fair and impartial evaluation of producers, and held a competition focusing on washed, a traditional refining method. This is the second time since last year that ONIBUS COFFEE introduced her coffee to you.

From the trader:

Rubiera Velázquez and her husband Vitelmo Ordóñez, who is also a coffee grower from Nariño, have been cultivating their land in San Isidro, in the province of Nadas Tolima, since 1994 and transforming it into Finca La Esmeralda.
They have been devoting themselves to their farm from that moment.
Their journey, defined by their unwavering commitment to growing coffee despite significant obstacles, is truly inspiring. La Esmeralda, which is located in a two-hour walk from the nearest road, was a basic means of supporting a family, but turned into an important coffee-growing project.

This transformation is a testament to their unwavering determination and coffee cultivation skills.  Located between 1,900 and 2,000 masl, La Esmeralda produces several coffee varieties, including Castillo Tambo, Castillo, Typica, Caturra, Geixa and the recently introduced Papayo variety.
The strategic decision in 2022 to invest and plant Papayo, a promising mutant of the Caturra variety, demonstrates Mr. Velasquez's forward-thinking approach to coffee cultivation.
Ms. Velazquez's commitment to coffee cultivation is particularly evident in his four-year effort to establish the Geisha lot at 2,000 masl.

Despite the agronomic difficulties and initial cupping results that did not meet expectations, she painstakingly applied trial and error methods, adapting fermentation protocols to varieties and adapting the process to climatic conditions.
Her obsession with fine-tuning continued.
This adaptability has resulted in a noticeable improvement in the quality of La Esmeralda's coffee, as evidenced by the fact that her Caturra lot ranked 13th at the F.F.T. Colombia Washed Festival 2023.
Mr. Velasquez and Mr. Ordóñez decided to attend the ceremony and embarked on a two-day trip.
This journey also shows their dedication to coffee production and their openness to new experiences.

Rubiera Velazquez's story is a testament to continued personal and professional evolution.
Her journey from working as a day laborer on her uncle's farm to founding and developing La Esmeralda with her husband is a testament to the hard work inherent in her coffee farming. Her ability to adapt, innovate, and face challenges head-on not only distinguishes her individuality, but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for the coffee-growing community.
The coffee variety of this lot is Caturra, and the processing method is traditional fully washed. Harvested cherries are left to ripen for 1 to 2 days (24 to 40 hours), and then the pulp is removed, then fermented in tanks for 25 to 40 hours, washed three times, and transported to drying racks to dry for 15 to 30 days.

Harvesting takes place in April, May and June, while Mitaca harvest takes place in October, November and December.
They dry the coffee in a raised bed dryer (Marquezina).

Rubiera is from a coffee producer family and is a third generation farmer.

Her career started five years ago when she worked with her uncle and ,together with her husband, acquired land and established her farm.
